This Is How We Roll

Ever wonder if it's possible to travel while still eating clean and healthy? The answer is mostly yes, but it's not easy! The two fit girls had to split apart this week as Nicole went on up to good ol' New Orleans for the weekend. Lauren held down the fort; quite literally, watching over Nicole's house and dog. Lauren had a whole new set of challenges she faced this week as well, the most prominent was being without Nicole for a whole 4 days (ok, maybe not, but Nicole would like to think so)!!!

The week started out strong, working with Mark the Trainer on Monday and Wednesday. We got our butts kicked as usual, but we also learned a new skill....ROLLLINGGG... According to the Huffington Post, "foam rolling is a form of self-myofascial release, or self-massage, that gets rid of adhesions in your muscles and connective tissue. ... Foam rolling also increases blood flow to your muscles and creates better mobility, helping with recovery and improving performance." So basically...exactly what we needed in our life. We had seen people using these in the gym, but never really understood how to use them, or why. Well, just like a lot of things in life, we have a love/hate relationship with these foam rollers. They make you feel better, it kind of hurts while you're doing it, and a lot of times it looks like you're trying to preform some weird karma sutra move with yourself. We roll before and after workouts, and sometimes we even wear sunglasses while we do it, just like our lovely picture.

Tuesday, Nicole was finally cleared to resume her normal activity. Well, she and Lauren decided to run on the treadmill, which essentially got Nicole UNCLEARED because she hurt the next day. No running until further notice... Wednesday night Nicole left for her adventure to New Orleans...

Planning is key for trips like this, and as prepared as she felt, she realized quickly that New Orleans was a new beast all together. New Orleans has a very unique food culture and it is quite hard to eat clean while experiencing that. The first challenge she faced was the actual road trip part. She made sure to pack her protein powder and have a back up of tuna and shrimp just in case she couldn't find anything worthy along the way. She got lucky and scored a nice kale/quinoa salad from WAWA first thing, which she added her shrimp to.

The hardest part was getting enough sleep this weekend, but she managed to fit in a couple of naps along the way, leaving her trusting companions to drive. She looked like she was up to some shady behavior when it came to mixing her protein shakes up in the back of her car.

Once in New Orleans, Nicole realized very quickly that 1) She loves the New Orleans/Creole food 2) to stay as healthy as possible she would have to become a crustacean! To avoid the fried or sauced items, she ate her weight in mussels, crab, fish, crawfish, and salad...which was all delicious and wouldn't kill her eating. She was always able to find some item on the menu that she could have.

She did have a bite of beignet at Cafe Du Monde, which she would recommend to anyone who is not eating clean. She had also checked out the hotel ahead of time and knew that there would be a gym that she could use to keep up with her cardio routine. She didn't expect such a nice gym, but it had a view and a lot of equipment. Starting her morning off with good cardio set the pace for the rest of the day. New Orleans is also a walking town, so she got plenty of steps and miles over her three days. She had a great time, would love to go back and is proud to say that it is possible to enjoy New Orleans without a drink in your hand! (Picture gallery below)

Meanwhile, back in town, Lauren was killing it with Mark the Trainer and some friends during a bonus workout. She had to run/walk a mile and a half and she caught not only her first ever football, but 3! She also flipped some tires (which is her favorite), ran some more, threw some shit, and ran some more. She did awesome! Nicole got a full report the minute she was done... In ways they were living vicariously through each others stories and snap chats.

Mothers Day morning was spent with family, but then the two reunited and headed to the gym to do what they do best.
